Bring on Spring

Preparation is the key at this time of year – make an effort to get the garden ready for Spring planting now and you will save time later.  Dig over bare soil and begin to plan your planting patterns for the new season. Remove any troublesome weeds before they have a chance to take hold when the soil warms up.

Spring flowering bulbs
Spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and crocuses begin to flower, giving the garden a welcome burst of colour after a long winter.

If you weren’t organised enough last year to plant your garden with Spring bulbs, Downham Country Garden Store offers a range of baskets and tubs brimming with Spring colour which work just as well.

Wayward climbing plants such as clematis and honeysuckle can be pruned back to encourage new growth.  Roses can be pruned as Spring approaches and borders tidied and mulched ready for the growing season ahead. Adding compost now will help to improve water retention later in the year.

Spring pruning
Half-hardy annuals can be sown in a propagator or the greenhouse to enable them to get a head start before the weather warms up.  If you want to be one of the first of your friends to harvest new potatoes, then try planting an early variety in a pot of compost now.

Root vegetables such as carrots, beetroot and radishes can be sown outside or under cloches.
