Bring on Summer
Summer is a rewarding time in the garden, when you can begin
to enjoy the fruits of your labours from the Spring. Don’t
rest on your laurels however, as the garden still needs plenty
of care and attention to nurture it, especially if we are blessed
with hot and dry weather.
Effective watering throughout the Summer is the key to keeping
all plants, especially those in containers or baskets, in tip-top
condition. When planting up your summer containers and hanging
baskets, using water retaining crystals can reduce watering
up to four times. A slow release fertiliser such as Osmocote
will feed your plants throughout the summer months, and can
be easily topped up with weekly feeds of a liquid fertiliser
such as Miracle Grow to keep your plants looking great. Invest
in a simple water butt from Downham Country Garden Store to
recycle rainwater, which is better for your plants and the
environment.
In early Summer, roses will benefit from a little fertiliser
sprinkled around the roots to encourage a good flower display.
At the end of flowering, deadheading your roses will help to
encourage good growth for next year. To ward off aphids and
blackspot, remember to spray your roses with Roseclear every
10 days throughout the growing season.
Once all danger of frost has passed, tender bedding plants
can be planted out, after hardening off in a cold frame if
they started life in the greenhouse. In the vegetable patch
and borders, seedlings will need to be thinned out in early
Summer to allow them to reach their full potential.
As Summer gets into full swing, pests and birds really begin
to attack plants and vegetables with a vengeance. Protect soft
fruit bushes and trees with netting and apply regular preventative
sprays to other plants to ward off the most persistent pests.
